Three Things Young Women in Business Should Know: Speak Out

Three Things Young Women in Business Should Know; Speak Out

In the early days women had to be dramatic in order to be noticed and taken seriously: in fact as women forged careers in the lat last century, they would often use their masculine traits – but what businesses really need are feminine strengths; particularly listening, nurturing and creativity.

Speak out
Consider your secondary school experiences; it was almost expected for boys to be loud and inappropriate in class, regarded as humour, the teacher remarks 'settle down'. However, if a girl were to say something similarly outspoken, the teacher would be astonished.

Women are still expected to be seen not heard. Whilst males are pushed harder to reach the top, girls are expected to grow into the outdated idea of housewife & mother, settled into lower level management.

The events industry is a competitive industry. If you want to succeed you must put your ideas forward and make your voice heard. Men will jump at an opportunity with both hands without question and accept full credit for their work where as women will alow others to speak before them.

Lois Frankel, Ph.D., president of Corporate Coaching International and author of the best-selling Nice Girls Don't Get The Corner Office, stresses the importance of being assertive in a work environment. "There's nothing wrong with saying, 'Excuse me, let me jump in here.'" It is not ‘pushing’ to speak up for yourself.
