Equal pay marches

Pay inadequacies between men and women are still a topical issue globally. It seems so backwards that these inequalities are still prevalent within the UK. There are many forms of discrimination, but generally, the term discrimination relates to when someone is treated ‘less favourably than another person because of their protective characteristic' (The Long Partnership, 2010) Women have a big enough struggle with gender discrimination and its upsetting to see that even within an industry that is female dominated, inequalities are still rife. The Equality Act 2010 (Government, 2010) was established to help try to prevent discrimination based on such things as gender and age although sometimes its hard to prove, especially when its only from yearly censuses that these types of pay inequalities are brought to light.

There are many ways us girls can stick together and help fight these injustices within the Western civilisation...

If you're interested in helping in our fight for equal pay to our male counterparts, there are many different marches you may be interested in attending...

What are you getting into?

What is an 'Event'?
The Oxford English Dictionary (2002: 493) defines an event as
  • 'a thing that happens or takes place, especially one of importance:
  • a planned public or social occasion:
  • each of several particular contests making up a sports competition:'
Event management is a recently new and rapidly growing industry which is becoming increasing popular. Event management is a broad industry and can incorporate tourism, business, sport, culture, heritage, charity, music, performing arts, visual arts, and many more. From large scale festivals and hallmark events to smaller events such as team building, intimate corporate dinners, and small conferences, almost any occasion or gathering of people can be classed as an event.

What are 'business events'?
Silvers (2010) describes corporate and business events as 'Any event that supports business objectives, including management functions, corporate communications, training, marketing, incentives, employee relations, and customer relations, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events. '

Women in Events and Business
A business woman is defined as 'a person who works in commerce especially at executive level' (oxford English Dictionary, 2002: 189)

The events industry is predominantly a female dominated industry however is this due to skills or preference? Women are statistically shown to be better communicators and organisers, two imperative skills essential for the planning and delivering of a successful event. Women are also less independent workers, valuing the efforts and contributions of their team members’ in order to achieve the task at hand, rather than looking to ‘go it alone’. (Peck 2012)

Men on the other hand, are often seen as competitive and domineering. According to Mckinsey (2011) Women hold 53% of corporate entry-level jobs, whereas men hold 63% of middle management roles and 74% of senior management positions. Men rate their success by the completion of particular tasks and tend to excel in more technical positions.

The event industry is highly competitive; as a result developing pitches, negotiating with suppliers, and building client relationships are key.

I AM WOMAN, Hear me Roar!!

It’s beginning of April and we are just couple of months away from the dissertation submission day. Lots of tension and concerns in the air what path to choose afterwards. So, if you are in a stage “confused.com” we hope this academic events business industry analysis will help to get you back on track. So if you are interested in going along with events management career, so this section is for you!
Events industry is comparably young and still expanding industry that can be confusing once choosing a particular career in it (Tassiopoulos, 2010). So, let’s narrow it to a particular types of event agencies that might suit a young and professional WOMAN. The major types of events intermediaries are:

-Business Travel agencies-
These are aimed at business clients only. They are the main intermediaries who are sourcing venues for various business events and may contribute to planning and organisation stage (Bowdin, et al, 2011). The employee would take a professional conference organiser’s role and would need to be knowledgeable about meeting management’s principles (Tassiopoulos, 2010).

-Convention and visitor bureaux (CVBs)-
As well known as DMOs (Destination Marketing Organisation) where you would be responsible for “promotion of long-term development and marketing of a destination, focusing on convention sales, tourism marketing and service (Tassiopoulos, 2010, p.79). It promotes hotels, facilities, attractions, restaurants and other providers serving a destination (Bowdin, et al, 2011). It’s better known as tourism boards that are not-for-profit organisations and their aim is to represent a specific region or a city. Those organisations link professionals, travel operators and individual visitors.

-Corporate Hospitality Companies (CHCs)-
Those organisations are aimed at sports and cultural events to help to improve links between the organisation and it’s clients. The job would involve in corporate team building events aimed at clients and employees. It could involve events planning as golf days, off-road driving or paintball games, etc (Tassiopoulos, 2010).

-Events production houses-
It would be more technical job that would involve actual staging of the event- designing, lighting, sound system and special effects. You should own creative and theoretical skills for this job (Tassiopoulos, 2010).

Those are just few options you might have in events and tourism industry. Either you are more technical or organisational or promotional lady choice is yours!
Good Luck with choosing your destiny!

World Travel Market 2012. Sea of opportunities. Just learn to swim!

8th November 2012. A chilly British morning on the Custom House platform in East London; the beginning of the World Travel Market (WTM). Suddenly the foggy and cold morning starts to get brighter and warmer as in front of me arise a massive billboard of Turkey with sunny golden beaches and Spanish cuisine evokes an appetite for breakfast and depiction of football and samba of a colourful Brazil mentally brings me away from London. In a few hours “all the world” will gather under Excel’s roof.
WTM is a global leading business event for the tourism and travel industry professionals. It’s a four-day business-to-business event that attracts everyone from the all sectors in the industry:  tourism providers, hotels, resorts, destinations together to network, to meet, negotiate and conduct business with the global travel trade (WTM, 2012). It’s the largest trade show in the world, organised in a very expert way to attract the best destinations’ ambassadors. During the show time London meets more than 2 million people/tourists! It is classified to mega events category that has a high tourist demand and high value (market share, quality, image enhancement, economic benefit, appropriateness, etc.) (Getz, 2008, p.407).  So, there’s a great opportunity to establish a contact with a desirable tourism organisation’s representative and ask for an internship possibilities. Though be aware that the first two days are strictly for business-to-business professionals and most likely many stand members would be interested to make a business with you, rather than speak about your career opportunities. So, approach the right person at the right time! Attending a high profile event it’s greatly recommended to do a research on the country’s profile you are interested in, country’s tourism organisation, industry updates and facts; get the names of the people you are willing to communicate with, such as marketing representatives, people responsible for recruitment/internship or if it’s not possible to gain such an info just ask politely to speak with a board member who could assist you in that matter. The last tip is to dress accordingly and prepare to impress the market sharks.
Take a look at David’s Hoffman (travel guide and travel expert creator) video and his advice for WTM.

Death of the Iron Lady

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/04/08/us-britain-thatcher-idUSBRE9370DA20130408

The first WOMAN in the history of Europe who was selected as Prime Minister.  Later, the first British WOMAN PM, winning three terms in a row. Margaret shined with her analytical thinning, clearance in expressing her thoughts, ambitiousness. A great political revolutionary, because SHE expanded the Conservative voter base and to a wealthy aristocratic class she added the middle-class voters.  SHE was graduate in Chemistry from Oxord Uni and worked as a scientist for a while. She was an advocate of measures to restrict the government's control, give individuals greater freedom from state, to end government’s interference in the economy and reduce public spending. While the conservative philosophy of consensus existed within the first two terms of her cadence, unemployment increased almost three times, numbers raised of poor people, and its efforts to control inflation was accompanied by bankruptcies. But then she said, “you must pay for the privilege to live in this country” and she tried to create the best economic climate  for her people to enjoy fully-fledged life.
Margaret Thatcher, You will be remembered as a public merit!
