What is an 'Event'?
The Oxford English Dictionary (2002: 493) defines an event as
- 'a thing that happens or takes place, especially one of importance:
- a planned public or social occasion:
- each of several particular contests making up a sports competition:'
Event management is a recently new and rapidly growing industry which is becoming increasing popular. Event management is a broad industry and can incorporate tourism, business, sport, culture, heritage, charity, music, performing arts, visual arts, and many more. From large scale festivals and hallmark events to smaller events such as team building, intimate corporate dinners, and small conferences, almost any occasion or gathering of people can be classed as an event.
What are 'business events'?
Silvers (2010) describes corporate and business events as 'Any event that supports business objectives, including management functions, corporate communications, training, marketing, incentives, employee relations, and customer relations, scheduled alone or in conjunction with other events. '
Women in Events and Business
A business woman is defined as 'a person who works in commerce especially at executive level' (oxford English Dictionary, 2002: 189)
The events industry is predominantly a female dominated industry however is this due to skills or preference? Women are statistically shown to be better communicators and organisers, two imperative skills essential for the planning and delivering of a successful event. Women are also less independent workers, valuing the efforts and contributions of their team members’ in order to achieve the task at hand, rather than looking to ‘go it alone’. (Peck 2012)
Men on the other hand, are often seen as competitive and domineering. According to Mckinsey (2011) Women hold 53% of corporate entry-level jobs, whereas men hold 63% of middle management roles and 74% of senior management positions. Men rate their success by the completion of particular tasks and tend to excel in more technical positions.
The event industry is highly competitive; as a result developing pitches, negotiating with suppliers, and building client relationships are key.
